A fine example with its original Ward 2 1/2 inch parallel iron. 13 7/8 inches long. Beautiful rosewood infill with a nice repair to the tote tip. Very fine mouth. Stewart Spiers born 1820, died 1899, made dovetailed infill planes in Ayr Scotland ca. 1840-1937. Probably the best of all time, his planes exhibit elegant flowing lines that to this day are unequaled. A cabinetmaker by trade his first planes were made from rough castings purchased in Edinburgh. By 1870 plane making was his sole occupation. Spiers used various iron manufacturers including WARD, IBBOTSON & HOWARTH Later Spiers planes had SPIERS irons.
